1. Aim

The Japanese Society of Limnology (JSL) has launched an international cooperative program for organizing joint symposiums with the Korean Society of Limnology.  The first joint symposium was held at Pusan National University, Busan, Korea, from May 19 to 22, 2004.  The main theme of the first symposium was gmaterial cycling and long-term ecological research in freshwater ecosystemh drawing researchers, experts, students and guests.  Participants of the symposium were offered a variety of symposium programs including 3 invited talks, 8 scientific sessions, 2 poster sessions, a reception, a field trip, and 2 full-day tours. 

 

Japan and Korea will be celebrating 40-year anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations in 2005, and a plan for organizing the 2nd Joint Symposium in the same year is ongoing.  The symposium is planned just before the 70th Convention of JSL, which will be held in Osaka.

 

The purpose of the joint symposium will be not only the output of scientific results from researchers as is usual with academic meetings, but also the communication of limnologists, educators, governments, and citizen.  Above all, this symposium aims (1) to improve the scientific understanding of the limnological issues by the next generation (children and youths) of both countries, and (2) to promote the interaction and the friendship between the next generations in both countries.  Therefore, a special session for interchange of information between young generations will be offered.

 

 

2. Expected Outcome

Insights and practice of pupils and students for limnological issues are more than what researchers expect.  The participating researchers will be aware of this fact.  At the same time, the researchers face the fact that there are needs for scientific advisors in the classrooms.  An exchange of information between researchers, teachers, and governments is expected to start a new communication between these communities.  By deepening the exchange among both cultures and by feed-back of information gathered in the symposium, it is expected to improve the scientific education program in both countries and possible outcome of new educational materials.
